What Are Dental Bridges?

As the name suggests, dental bridges are solutions used to bridge the gap between one or more missing teeth, which may have been caused by injury or gum disease, helping to restore functionality and improve the overall appearance of your smile. They are a blend of cosmetic dentistry and restorative treatment, helping both appearance and functionality.
Dental bridges are made up of two or more dental crowns placed on the teeth on either side of the gap with a false tooth or teeth situated in between. The natural teeth then support the fake tooth, and the end result is a natural, even smile. The false teeth are known as ‘pontics’ and are usually made from porcelain, gold, alloys, or a combination of these.
The Benefits of Dental Bridges

Dental bridges can have several advantages to help transform your smile, and these include:
- Restore your ability to chew and speak without issue
- Restore and maintain the shape of your face
- Boost confidence and self-esteem
- Allow the force of your bite to be even and correct by replacing any missing teeth
- Prevent any remaining teeth from moving out of position
What Are the Types of Dental Bridges?

If you decide that a dental bridge is the treatment option for you, the next step is to pick the one that is the best fit. The different types of bridges available include:
Traditional Bridges

These are the most common and well-known types. Traditional bridges involve having dental implants or crowns added to the natural tooth on either side of the gap. A false tooth is then added to the space, supported by the surrounding teeth. These tend to be constructed from ceramics or porcelain fused to metal.
Cantilever Bridges

If you only have one anchor tooth beside the missing tooth, cantilever bridges can be beneficial. They are a less conventional solution and are not suitable for use in the back of the mouth, as they can damage other teeth by applying too great a force.
Maryland Bonded Bridges

These are supported by a metal or porcelain framework, which is bonded to your existing teeth. These types of bridges are made from plastic teeth and gums, porcelain, or porcelain fused to metal.
Typically, these are used for people who can’t do implants until they are fully grown, such as those born with a missing tooth, or more commonly teenagers with missing teeth.
Do I Need A Dental Bridge?

Deciding whether you need a dental bridge is a decision best left to Dr. Perry or Dr. De Bonis, and we will use your first visit to advise you on the best course of action for your individual needs. As a general rule, a dental bridge is ideal for those patients looking to fill in a gap in their teeth and restore their smile to its full glory with a fast and easy solution.
How Will My Bridge Be Fitted?

Getting your dental bridge fitted and fixed is a fast and easy process. Whether you need full or partial dentures, the process is much the same.
On your first appointment, you will see Dr. Perry or Dr. De Bonis use a mild anesthetic to numb the area and prepare the teeth on either side. An impression of the teeth is made using dental putty, and this will be sent to the lab to make the bridge and crown or crowns.
In the interim, a temporary bridge is fitted to help protect the teeth. Our dentists may also use a shade guide to help establish the best shade for your bridge. This will resemble your natural tooth color and be designed to match your hair, eyes, and complexion for a natural finish, which you will be proud to show off!
The second appointment will then see the temporary bridge removed and replaced with the custom-built bridge and checked for fit, size, and comfort before being cemented into place. You may have to return for a few checkups to verify that the fit is perfect. Fixed bridges will not be cemented until you have visited a few times to ensure the correct fit.
